Who we are
This website is run by the Centre for Eastern and North Eastern Regional Studies, Kolkata (CENERS-K), a registered think tank studying development, peace and security in the Eastern Hemisphere.
Our website address is https://ceners-k.com. Our office is at Second Floor, 3A Lovelock Place, Kolkata — 700017, West Bengal, India. You can write to us at info@ceners-k.com or telephone +91 98000 67688.
For the purposes of India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, CENERS-K is the Data Fiduciary for the information described here. For visitors in the European Union and the United Kingdom, we are the data controller.
What this privacy policy covers
This privacy policy explains what we collect when you use this website, why we collect it, how long we keep it, and what you can ask us to do about it. It is written in plain language on purpose. If anything here is unclear, please write to us and we will explain it.
This privacy policy covers this website only. It does not cover the Calcutta Journal of Global Affairs site, our YouTube channel, or any other website we link to. Those have their own policies.
The information we collect
When you write to us through the contact form
Our contact form asks for your name, email address, an optional subject, and your message. You choose what to put in the message, so please do not send us sensitive personal details you would not want kept in an email inbox.
Along with what you type, our form software records a few technical details with each submission:
- the date and time you sent it;
- your IP address;
- your browser and operating system (the “user agent”);
- the page of our site you sent it from, and the page you arrived from;
- your browser’s preferred language.
We record these to help us tell a real enquiry from an automated one, and to answer you properly. They are stored with your message in our own database on this website. They are not sent to any outside company.
When you send the form, two emails are produced: one to our office so that we can reply, and a short confirmation to the address you gave, so that you know it reached us.
When you simply read a page
Like nearly every website, our web server keeps a short technical log of each request — the IP address, the page asked for, the time, and the browser used. Our hosting provider keeps these logs for security and to keep the site running. We do not use them to build a profile of you.
We also use Google Analytics to understand which articles are read and which are not. It tells us numbers and patterns — how many people read a page, which country they were in, whether they used a phone or a computer. It does not tell us who you are.
If you have an account on this site
Accounts on this website exist only for our own editorial team. We do not offer public registration. If you hold an account, we store the name, username and email address you gave us, and the site keeps sign-in cookies while you are logged in.
Cookies
A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep. This site uses them in three ways:
- Necessary cookies — set only if you log in as a member of our team, to keep you signed in.
- Security cookies — Cloudflare Turnstile, which protects our forms from automated abuse, may set a short-lived cookie while it checks that a real person is filling in the form.
- Analytics cookies — Google Analytics sets cookies to count visits and tell a returning reader from a new one.
You can delete or block cookies in your browser settings at any time. Blocking analytics cookies will not stop you reading anything on this site. If you would rather Google Analytics did not measure your visit at all, Google offers a browser add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout (opens in a new tab).
Other services this site uses
Some parts of our pages are served by other companies. When your browser loads them, that company necessarily sees your IP address. We have listed them so you know exactly who is involved:
| Service | What it does here | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| GoDaddy | Hosts this website and delivers its files | Every page |
| Google Analytics (through Site Kit) | Counts visits and tells us which articles are read | Every page |
| Google Fonts | Supplies the typefaces the site is set in | Every page |
| Cloudflare Turnstile | Checks that a person, not a bot, is sending a form | Contact form, staff login |
| Google Maps | Shows the map of our Kolkata office | Contact page |
| YouTube | Supplies the preview pictures for our video links | Media & Lectures, home page |
| jsDelivr | Delivers a small piece of open-source code | A few pages |
The map on our Contact page is loaded from Google. If you would rather not load it, our full address is written out beside it in plain text, so you lose nothing by blocking it.
Why we are allowed to use your information
- Your consent — you choose to fill in the contact form and press send. You may withdraw that consent at any time by asking us to delete your message.
- Our legitimate interest — keeping the site secure, stopping automated abuse, and understanding in general terms how our research is read.
- Legal obligation — where a law requires us to keep or produce a record.
How long we keep it
- Contact form messages — kept for up to 24 months so we can follow up on a conversation, then deleted. Ask us sooner and we will delete yours.
- Server logs — kept for a short period by our hosting provider, usually a few weeks.
- Analytics — kept by Google according to the retention period set on our account.
- Team accounts — kept while the person works with us, and removed when they no longer do.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information, and we never have. We do not share it with advertisers. We do not send you marketing you did not ask for.
Your information is seen only by the service providers listed in the table above, who process it on our behalf to make the site work, and by our own staff who answer your message. We would disclose information to an authority only where a law obliges us to.
Where your information is kept
This website and its database are hosted on servers operated by GoDaddy. Some of the services above — Google and Cloudflare in particular — operate worldwide, so your information may be handled outside India. Those companies use standard contractual safeguards for such transfers.
Your rights
Whatever country you are in, you may ask us to:
- tell you what we hold about you, and why;
- correct anything that is wrong or out of date;
- delete what we hold, where we are not required to keep it;
- stop using it for a particular purpose;
- receive a copy of what you gave us, in a readable file;
- nominate someone to exercise these rights for you if you are unable to, as India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 allows.
Write to info@ceners-k.com with the words “Privacy request” in the subject line. We will reply within 30 days. There is no charge. We may ask you a question or two to be sure we are giving your information to you and not to somebody else.
If you are not satisfied with our answer, you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India. Visitors in the European Union or the United Kingdom may complain to their own supervisory authority.
Keeping your information safe
This site is served only over an encrypted connection (HTTPS). Our administration area sits behind a changed sign-in address, two-factor authentication and a bot check. Access to stored messages is limited to the few staff who need it. No website can promise perfect security, but if a breach ever affected your information, we would tell you and the Data Protection Board of India as the law requires.
Children
This site publishes policy research for a general and professional readership. It is not aimed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, please write to us and we will delete it.
Accessibility of this policy
This privacy policy is written to the same standard as the rest of our site — WCAG 2.2 Level AA — with real headings, a table that reads correctly in a screen reader, and plain wording. If any part of it is hard to read or hard to reach, please tell us and we will fix it. Our Accessibility Statement explains more.
Changes to this privacy policy
If we change how we handle your information, we will update this privacy policy and change the date at the top. Material changes will be noted here rather than made quietly.
