CENERS-K — Centre for Eastern and North Eastern Regional Studies, Kolkata — is committed to digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We continually improve the user experience for everyone and apply the relevant accessibility standards.
Conformance Status
This website conforms to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA. The WCAG defines requirements that improve accessibility for people with disabilities.
⌨ Keyboard Navigation
All functionality is operable via keyboard alone. Tab order is logical and consistent. Focus indicators are clearly visible (WCAG 2.4.7, 2.4.11).
🔤 Text Alternatives
All non-text content has a text alternative. Decorative images have empty alt attributes (WCAG 1.1.1).
🎨 Colour Contrast
Text meets minimum 4.5:1 contrast ratio for normal text and 3:1 for large text against backgrounds (WCAG 1.4.3).
📱 Responsive Design
Content is accessible on mobile, tablet and desktop. No horizontal scrolling required at 320px width (WCAG 1.4.10).
🔍 Scalable Text
Text can be resized up to 200% without loss of content or functionality (WCAG 1.4.4).
🗂 Semantic Structure
Proper heading hierarchy, landmark regions (header, nav, main, footer), and ARIA attributes throughout (WCAG 1.3.1).
🚀 Skip Link
A "Skip to main content" link is the first focusable element, allowing keyboard users to bypass navigation (WCAG 2.4.1).
📋 Forms
All form inputs have explicit labels. Error messages identify required fields and describe how to correct them (WCAG 1.3.1, 3.3.1, 3.3.2).
🎯 Focus Management
Interactive elements have a minimum focus target size. Focus is managed appropriately in dynamic components (WCAG 2.5.8).
⏸ Motion & Animation
The news ticker is paused on hover/focus. CSS respects prefers-reduced-motion (WCAG 2.2.2).
Technical Specifications
This website was built using:
- Semantic HTML5 with appropriate ARIA roles and attributes
- CSS with mobile-first responsive design
- Lightweight JavaScript with no dependency on jQuery
- WordPress CMS with accessible custom theme
Known Limitations
We are aware of the following areas under active improvement:
- Embedded Google Maps may have limited keyboard accessibility — a text address alternative is always provided.
- Older PDF documents may not be fully tagged for screen readers — we are working to remediate these progressively.
- Third-party Google Forms used for membership and internship applications may have accessibility limitations outside our control.
