Introduction
India’s North-East region presents one of the most complex border management challenges in the world. Eight states share international borders with five nations: Bhutan, China, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Nepal. The total length of these international borders exceeds 5,200 kilometres.
Border Management Challenges
The management of these borders is complicated by geographic, demographic, political and security factors. Dense jungle terrain, seasonal flooding, and limited road connectivity make physical border management extremely difficult. The region’s tribal communities, who have historical ties that predate the modern nation-state, straddle these borders.
Security Threats
The porous nature of North-East India’s borders has been exploited by a range of non-state actors. The Myanmar crisis has added fresh complexity to cross-border security dynamics.
Policy Recommendations
Effective border management requires a comprehensive approach integrating economic development of border areas, diplomatic engagement with neighbouring states, community policing, and intelligence fusion centres.
