• Joined Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1971 and assigned to West Bengal cadre.
• After serving as Sub Divisional Officer in two Subdivisions and then as Additional District
Magistrate in Malda, joined Government of India in the Department of Supply & Rehabilitation
as Under Secretary, Integrated Finance. • Served as District Magistrate of Darjeeling and
Midnapore districts.
• Served as Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Education and Social Welfare Departments,
Government of Tripura. • Joined Government of India in 1987 and served as Joint Secretary,
Cabinet Secretariat and then as Joint Secretary, Department of Electronics from till 1992.
• Subsequently, served as Municipal Commissioner, Calcutta Municipal Corporation, Special
Secretary, Power Department, Secretary, Tourism Department, Principal Secretary, Information
and Cultural Affairs Department and Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, West Bengal.
• Served as Home Secretary, Government of West Bengal from 2001 to 2005.
• Joined as Chief Secretary, Government of West Bengal on July 1, 2005 and served in this
capacity till retirement on December 31, 2008.
• Post retirement, he is currently on the Board as Independent Director in several public limited
companies which include Emami Ltd, Century Plyboards (India) Ltd, Star Cement Ltd, India
Power Corporation Ltd, Skipper Ltd, B&A Ltd, Bengal Ambuja Housing Development Ltd.
• He is a Governing Council Member of CENERS-K.
